Leisure in Kiel: activities, culture and nature for your stay

Maritime Kiel: the fjord, the harbour and sailing culture

The Kiel Fjord shapes the cityscape and puts the focus on water sports. In the warmer seasons, sailing, stand up paddling, fjord trips and open boat facilities are especially popular. During Kieler Woche, one of the largest sailing events in the world, there are regattas, music events and an international cultural programme. Along the Kiellinie promenade, lawns and stretches of beach invite you to unwind quickly after work.

Beaches and recreation

The Baltic Sea beaches around Kiel in Schilksee, Laboe, Falckenstein and Heikendorf are quick to reach and offer attractive ways to relax. They are well suited to walks, jogging routes, beach volleyball and water sports. Falckenstein beach lies near the approach to the Friedrichsort lighthouse and is one of the widest natural beaches on the fjord. Schreventeichpark serves as a recreation area close to the centre, with running paths, lawns and places to eat nearby.

Culture, museums and events

Kiel has a dense cultural programme:

  • Theater Kiel with opera house, playhouse and ballet
  • City and maritime museum, including the historic museum in Warleberger Hof
  • Zoological Museum with a focus on marine biology
  • Kunsthalle zu Kiel with a modern and a classical collection

Annual events such as Kieler Woche, the Bootshafensommer festival, harbour tours, harbour markets and open air concerts add further things to do.

Sport and exercise

The Olympic harbour in Schilksee, numerous rowing and sailing clubs and modern gyms provide a professional sporting environment. The fjord offers ideal conditions for cycling, running routes near the shore and water sports. The Kiel Canal is a popular route for runners and cyclists and allows several kilometres of low traffic exercise in green surroundings.

Food, drink and city life

Kiel offers a varied food scene with fish restaurants on the fjord, international cuisine on Holtenauer Straße and modern cafés in the quarter around the Alter Botanischer Garten. Weekly markets, food trucks and regional producers widen the choice. Shopping is concentrated in the Sophienhof centre, Holstenstraße and Holtenauer Straße.

What are the differences to Airbnb and other temporary types of accommodation?

Other temporary types of accommodation compared

  • Hotels and apartment hotels: Bookable by the day, with services such as cleaning, more expensive per night but more flexible; up to 40% more expensive than temporary flats.
  • Serviced apartments and boarding houses: Similar to furnished flats, but with hotel services such as a concierge; suitable for stays of several months and particularly popular in cities.
  • Micro apartments and co-living: Small, efficient units (often under 30 m²) that are cheaper and more environmentally friendly. They are rented by single people or commuters who share the communal areas.
  • Shared flats and guest houses: Inexpensive rooms in a shared setting, flexible but with less privacy, often used by students.
  • Container and modular housing: Temporary, mobile solutions for construction sites or transitional periods, economical but less comfortable.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Everything you need to know about your stay

Here you will find quick answers to the questions we are asked most often. If your question is not among them, please contact us directly.

With temporary living, accommodation is rented for a clearly defined period, usually several weeks to several months. What counts is the duration agreed in the contract, which gives both sides planning certainty. These agreements differ from a classic tenancy through the fixed term, all inclusive cost models with bills included, and simplified handover processes. For tenants this creates a flexible, time saving and cost transparent housing solution that greatly reduces the effort of a regular move.

The deposit secures the inventory and is due before you move in. It is normally €500.00 for rooms and apartments and €1,000.00 for team accommodation.
Good to know: the cost of the final cleaning is offset directly against the deposit when you move out, so you do not need to transfer it separately. The remaining amount is usually refunded to your account within 14 days of your departure.

Registration (landlord confirmation) is possible in principle, but it is tied to one condition: your planned stay must be at least 6 months. For short term project work below that duration, registering one of our properties as a main residence is normally not possible. Please raise this with us before you sign.

Yes. To keep prices fair and administration low, our minimum rental period is 7 nights. Most of our guests stay several weeks or months. Extending your stay is usually straightforward if the accommodation is available.

We want you to travel light: bed linen is provided free of charge and changed every 14 days.
Please note: towels are not part of the equipment. Please bring your own hand and bath towels.

We know that projects can shift. That is why we offer far more flexible notice periods than the regular housing market. Depending on the type of agreement they are usually between 7 and 14 days, and 30 days to the end of the term for long term agreements. The conditions that apply to you are set out individually in your quote.

Your accommodation is designed for the number of people named in the agreement. Short visits are of course no problem. If a guest wants to stay overnight, this is only possible by prior arrangement and for a small surcharge. Subletting to third parties is not permitted.

Your check in is entirely contactless and flexible. Once the first rent payment and the deposit have reached us, we send you detailed arrival instructions and the code for the key safe at the property. That way you can arrive without stress, even late in the evening or at the weekend, with no fixed appointment to arrange.

Temporary living ends as soon as the stay no longer counts as temporary. That is the case, for example, when the tenant moves their centre of life into the accommodation, exceeds the agreed fixed term, or when circumstances point to permanent use.

Legally, the tenant has to show that they do not intend to live there permanently. If they cannot, the fixed term tenancy can turn into a regular, open ended one. A stay of up to six months is normally considered clearly temporary.
